Edo-period artists were profoundly engaged with the natural world and all its creatures, which they believed to be inhabited by spirits. Inspired by Shinto animism and Buddhism, these artists painted birds and puppies, trees and flowers, and even rivers and the sea vibrantly animated with the spirit of life. In order to infuse their nonhuman subjects with a sense of life, they devoted time and effort to carefully observing them in the real world.
