In their quest for creative expression, Edo-period artists explored the water solubility of sumi, charcoal ink. Tarashikomi is a wet-on-wet ink technique that allows different shades of ink to organically mingle. Artists also used their command of sumi ink and brush techniques to experiment with abstraction and washes in order to suggest, rather than define, their subjects.
